Social Network (This one is about the movie!)/ What Larry thinks about the Winklevoss twins!

Interesting news I found about the Winklevoss twins (think about the meeting with Larry Summers in the movie!)

What did Larry Summers really think of the Winklevoss twins?
"Rarely, have I encountered such swagger, and I tried to respond in kind," the former president of Harvard said in an interview at Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference.
Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss were at Harvard at the same time that Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, and they had come to Summers for help in their fight for a piece of the action.
Summers dismissed them, a scene dramatized in the movie the "Social Network."
Summers didn't try to dispel the portrayal.
"One of the things you learn as a college president is that if an undergraduate is wearing a tie and jacket on Thursday afternoon at three o'clock, there are two possibilities. One is that they're looking for a job and have an interview; the other is that they are an a**hole. This was the latter case."
The Winklevoss twins have taken dozens of runs at Facebook in court since 2004. The brothers and a third Harvard classmate, Divya Narendra, have alleged that Zuckerberg had stolen the idea for Facebook from them.
Facebook promptly countersued the trio and their own social networking site, ConnectU, alleging that they had hacked into Facebook to steal data and spam users. The legal volley of claims and counterclaims went back and forth until 2008, when the Winklevosses and Narendra signed a settlement valued at $65 million, part in cash and part in Facebook stock.
But the trio later tried to pull out of the deal, alleging that Facebook had misrepresented the value of its stock. A judge ruled against them and forced the settlement to go through, but the Winklevosses and Narendra took the case to an appeals court.
In April, Judge Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, attempted to put the kibosh on the case. "At some point, litigation must come to an end," Kozinski wrote in his decision. "That point has now been reached."
In June, the twins abandoned their plans to appeal to the Supreme Court for an unwinding of their 2008 settlement, and followed up a day later with a new motion in Boston federal court.

Book Social Networks (A List of Social Networks For The Booklover)

Most booklovers share two things in common: (1) the love of a great book and (2) sharing that book with friends. From book clubs to reading groups, social networking has always played a part in the avid reader's life. It is no surprise this love has gone digital.
Book social networks are those focused on reading and sharing books with others through book lists and reviews. Not only are these book-based social networks a great way to share good books, they are also an excellent way to find new books to read.
This list does not include book exchange websites. It is also sorted based on popularity.

Goodreads

Book Social Network - Goodreads
The goal of Goodreads is to find good reads, those books that leave you satisfied and/or wanting more. It is also about avoiding bad reads, which are books that aren't worth the paper they are printed on. As a booklover's social network, Goodreads allows you to build a list of books, rate and review those books, and find out what your friends are reading.

Shelfari

Book Social Network - Shelfari
Shelfari is a social network devoted to create a global community of booklovers by encouraging users to discuss and share their favorite books with friends and strangers. By allowing users to build a virtual bookshelf, Shelfari creates a great visual interface for sharing great books.

LibraryThing

Book Social Network - LibraryThing
Any avid reader will find LibraryThing to be a great way to organize their reading list. By interacting with Amazon and the Library of Congress, books can be easily added to the list. LibraryThing also creates a modifiable page for every author, which makes it a great social network for writers who want to promote their books and connect with their readers.

BookCrossing

Book Social Network - Bookcrossing
BookCrossing is a book-based social network where members release books back into the public by leaving them on park benches, at the gym or at school. One part social network and one part social experiment, BookCrossing lets you participate in giving back to the world of literature by passing on your favorite books.

Reader2

Book Social Network - Reader2
Reader2 is a book social network that allows you to tag your books with a keyword and categorize them any way you want. You can interact with friends, display your book lists on your own blog, and discuss books with other readers. One great feature of Reader2 is the ability to recommend a book based on another title. This works by matching up similar keywords used to describe the book and generating a list based on those keyword matches.

Booktribes

Book Social Network - Booktribes
Booktribes is a social network devoted to readers with a goal of allowing users to discover great new books. You can search through their database for books, read reviews, and see what other books the reviewers liked.

Revish

Book Social Network - Revish
Revish is a social network for book reviews. Not only can you write reviews of your favorite books, you can also create a journal of the books you have read. And by using the Revish API and the provided widgets, you can also share your book list on your blog or on your MySpace or Facebook profile.

ConnectViaBooks

Book Social Network - ConnectViaBooks

Lists of Ten

With comments about how I should categorize these networks with respect to their usage, I have decided to follow these categories:
1) Professional
2) Friends
3) Gaming
4) Shopping
These four categories would be of most use to businesses trying to increase visibility through use of social networks. Before going into the lists, one of the readers wanted me to point out how this blog could be useful. To do that, I want to first point out the uses of social networking in businesses. Keeping in line with the title of this post, these are my ten reasons:
1) Customer and Member Relationship Development: Customer satisfaction is at an all-time low, perhaps as a result reduced business focus on actual relationships, and an increased business focus on “customer relationship management” systems emphasizing management of data rather than personal connections. Online social networks allow a prospective customer or prospective member to easily facilitate a real, human-level connection with individuals within an organization. This enables genuine business relationships to form and puts an authentic human face on the interaction, changing the external perception of an organization from a sterile, faceless behemoth into a collection of individuals who are ready to help.
2) Customer Support (Connecting The Customer With The Right Resource)
Successful customer support achieves a number of goals. Basic customer service includes, of course, assisting customers when they have problems or questions about an organization’s products. However, online networks enable exceptional customer support that goes beyond the basics, which allows customers to connect with experts in an organization who have deep knowledge in a particular area. Similarly, a strong online network enables experts within an organization to be alerted when a problem that requires their knowledge comes into the customer support queue, and facilitates the creation of strong communities in the form of valuable user groups and member networks.
3) Use The Network To Find An Expert Or Locate Implicit Knowledge
Only a fraction of an organization’s “knowledge” exists in databases. Another fraction exists in the form of explicit documents and reports that may be found on an organizational intranet. The vast majority of organizational knowledge, however, exists only in the heads of its members. Inside an organization, online networks with even basic profiles of its individuals’ experience, location and interests can greatly reduce the time required for organizational problem-solving, through enabling faster connection between a questioner and the person who has solved similar problems in the past.
4) Ease Post-Acquisition Integration: Even though acquisitions are on the upswing, a majority of mergers and acquisitions fail within three years of inception. The most common cause of failure is lack of alignment and understanding between individuals in the acquiring and acquired organizations. Online social networks, giving a view to the “real” individuals within the organizations, aid in the creation of understanding between both parties by allowing members of both organizations to view each other as a collection of individuals, rather than an amorphous “them.”
5) Provide The “Whole Product”: It is rare that a single organization can provide all the pieces needed to meet a customer’s entire need. For example, even though a real estate agent aids in the process of buying a home, an entire network of other service providers, such as title company, bank, insurance agents, contractors, and others, is required in order to fully meet the customer’s need. By creating a strong network of complementary providers with similar philosophies and business practices, a single service provider can provide a much greater proposition to a prospective customer than an individual working without the benefit of the network.
6) Understand And Visualize The Actual Communication Paths Within The Organization
While an organizational chart may show the reporting or budgeting hierarchy of an organization, the connections in an online social network create the actual flow of information for an organization. Explicitly creating a social network within the organization can help all members better understand how information gets shared and highlights the areas within the organization that are truly responsible for effecting change, turning the “company directory” into a living, breathing knowledge network.
7) Supercharge Meeting Facilitation And Preparation: The unfortunate part of meetings and conferences is that it always seems like you don’t run into the people you really want to meet until the final day of the event, when you run into them randomly in the buffet line. A dedicated online social network created before the event enables attendees to use their time at the event more efficiently, by enabling attendees to determine who they want to connect with before they even leave home.
8) Share Knowledge: By connecting an social network with basic subscription technologies (such as RSS, or “Really Simple Syndication”), an individual can easily “subscribe” to updates from customers and colleagues. This enables a straightforward way to stay abreast of the goings-on in projects of interest, as well as a way to share knowledge within an organization without additional effort. It also addresses the issue of email overload, as knowledge is pulled by those who have a need or interest for updates, rather the updates being pushed to those who may have only tangential interest in an issue.
9) Differentiate Your Service With Brand You: In a number of industries, the fit between customer and service provider is the differentiator. If a customer can easily identify his or her areas of commonality with a prospective service provider such as a financial planner, real estate agent or insurance provider, that customer can have some assurance that the service provider will understand the customer’s point-of-view, and provide the type of service that the customer expects and supports.
10) Prepare For Coming Demographic Changes In Business: Although online social networks are relatively new to business, the MySpace and Facebook generation has grown up with them. By the time these individuals enter the workforce, online social networking with simply be a part of the fabric of business, and the organizations that have determined how to best integrate them into their operations will be the ones that are most successful.

I hope that this comprehensively answers the questions as to why social networks are relevant to businesses today.

Social Networks (No, its not about the movie!)

Social Networks have truly changed the way we view the world today. Their importance in the fields of business, life and the pursuit of happiness cannot be questioned any longer. This blog will attempt to rate the top 30 social networking sites across the globe, in terms of their usability, ease of access, ability to network with others, presence, and many more factors. With these, I will attempt to show how social networks (and not just Facebook!) have truly connected people across the globe, making the Earth a much smaller place and in effect have changed the six degrees of separation to possibly just three. Considering the fact that it took man almost a million years to achieve six degrees of separation, the reduction to three in the last decade is truly remarkable.

I will start with number 30 and move up the ladder to rank 1 in this blog. Along the way, I will post my own experience with each site as well as testimonials from others and possibly interview experiences with executives from each site. I hope that as a reader/follower of this blog you would be able to appreciate the power of social networks. I will intersperse these rankings with other associated companies which are notable mentions (like Zynga for example) which are dependent highly on these sites and have become large businesses on their own as well.

Be on the lookout for the rankings!
